Janie Slegers lives with her husband Trevor and their three daughters — Jane, Rosie, and Kit — on their small family farm in Buttonwillow, California. Deeply rooted in both faith and community, Janie is passionate about creating spaces where people feel welcomed, connected, and cared for. Whether through church, nonprofit work, or opening her home to friends and neighbors, hospitality and community-building are at the heart of everything she does. Known for her ability to bring people together, with good food of course, Janie has become a trusted connector and advocate within the Bakersfield community.

Janie currently serves on the board of Bakersfield Angels as Director of Community Engagement. Since the organization’s beginning, she and her family have been deeply invested in supporting children and families involved in foster care. Janie uses her strong Bakersfield roots and community connections to help expand awareness, build partnerships, and encourage others to engage in the mission of supporting foster youth and caregivers throughout Kern County. She continues to be inspired by the growth of the foster care community and the many ways faith and compassion can create lasting impact.

After graduating from Academy of Art University in San Francisco and marrying her husband Trevor in 2014, Janie moved to Chicago, where they spent six years enjoying city life as young professionals. During that season, they felt called to step into temporary foster care through Safe Families for Children. In their first year alone, they hosted five children and quickly developed a deep love for serving vulnerable families and supporting children in crisis.
